During this workshop at the Ascend Studio we explored the way our body makes shapes in our asana poses. We explored the exterior alignment of a shape and the interior space a shape makes you feel not just when putting your body in the pose but also what does it take for your body and mind to present in making that shape with different kinds of mediums collectively on a large piece of paper. We used the 5 universal shapes for our exploration - focussing on the sacred spiral. The spiral symbolizes growth and evolution. It is a process of coming to the same point again and again but on a different level. The result is a new perspective on issues, people, places and things. Every mark that is made in this heartful yoga process is never the same capturing the experience of those involved.

Hudson Highlands Women’s Collaborative was instrumental in supporting me to create Heartful Yoga as my business. This group of smart supportive women got together to experience the process of collaborating in art making for a cause. We focussed on supporting each other through the practice in partnering up through sharing, generous listening, movement and reflection. We are partnering up with a charity called Women Together. Women Together ignites our energy to grow, make meaningful, lasting connections and affect positive change.

An outdoor celebration of the summer solstice was celebrated on the banks of the Hudson River in Cold Spring, NY. People of all ages joined in the celebration of the sun, the moon, the sky, the river, the mountains and the earth. Our beautiful surroundings can only be taken care of from a place of awareness that we are all connected. We practiced in dedication to the all that supports our existence in hopes to always only take what is needed and give back where we can.

The Council on Addiction Prevention and Education of Dutchess County, NY sponsored a family workshop to bring the community together in yoga, mindfulness and art making. CAPE’s mission is to help foster a health-focused community educating families on risk factors contributing to behavioral health (including substance use disorders), emphasizing prevention and harm reduction efforts, and engaging in compassionate care practices to better understand addiction as a complex brain disease. This workshop reminded families that they can make art together and help heal each other.

Ever notice a child’s freedom in exploring the possibilities of a crayon—how they hold it, peel the paper off, smell it and sometimes want to eat it? This workshop explored our deep connections of our hands for self-expression and their connection through our heart center. We isolated hand muscles and movements through mudras and poses and explored the our physical body with its range of motion and limitations in the hands bed opening our hearts through self expression of our body before coming to the paper to play to let it out emphasizing the sensory input of our hands and making connections through our heart.

A 3 day music, art and yoga festival descended on Cold Spring, NY at Camp Lake Surprise. Festival goers immersed themselves in their yoga practice, their love for music and their desire to explore their creative side. Many artists, musicians and yogis got together to support each other in their heartful yoga practice where we chanted, moved the breath and the body with support to each other to let our creative energy connect as a community in choosing our best approach to express ourselves through color and lines connecting us together.

To breath is to live! We explored the process of our breath with a pranayama and asana focussed practice to warm up for physical and creative exploration. We identified the sensations of the practice through color and eventually took the mark making to be made with the breath. Playing with the process art making and our perspective of what is yoga & art - “look Mom no hands!”

The focus on this workshop was based on the meditation practice. Meditation gives the important break from daily life in order to focus yourself, get clarity, and tap into the non-verbal world of creative energy. The subtleties of the practice were worked through by trying different mediums for self-expression in mark making and communication. Different mindfulness techniques were explored and then translated with color as a focus to express the inner experience.

There is sacredness in moving through space and making a shape with our body. Artists for years have been memorized by how the body has a gestural shape and the surrounding space around it. Our exploration of our vinyasa practice took us through examining our human form in different poses to realize the sacred shapes we can make with each pose and how the fundamentals of a shape - circles, squares, lines, swirls, and crosses. We took this aspect of the yoga practice onto paper to get into the flow of making shapes onto paper to see how the body physically works while making large gestural marks of shapes onto paper.

This masterpiece was created on the banks of the Hudson River during the Ascend Festival 2018. As the theme of this workshop took us in two directions just like the Hudson River flows. The energy of life, our Prana, was the emphasis of the practice for exploring polarities and the pulse of life that runs through us all.

Our yoga tools of asana, pranayama, and mediation practices became the guide to balance the creative flow during this workshop. We harnessed our awareness of our physical, mental, energetic, and spiritual bodies on the mat through extended stretching, strengthening, and lengthening the body with the breath. In addition, our art making process on paper was with unique tools and techniques in a non-traditional approach. We took extra time in a yin yoga like approach to find the flow of our inner shakti hoping that we can eventually translate this to how we move, breathe, rest and react in daily life.
