What lies between...
So many times, as my eyes draw upon the outlines of objects, I am drawing the space between the objects to make shapes and marks. Most of what I draw, or photograph is about that relational space created by something around and within something. Seeing what is not seen as the object but rather the subject of the underlying concept that presents itself in the space between.
What lies between what is seen can be super special. Take the word “Ma” in Japanese for example- it refers to the gap or emptiness that exists between objects, situations, or relationships. Take it in simplicity of yoga -it represents the essence of energy or intention that can be felt or experienced in that space, or a pause in the movement or flow in the element of space. Take it in simplicity of the respiratory cycle- a gap in the complete exhale to an empty breath that sometimes causes the presence of Grace to creep into the moment, completely surrendering to all that is and was and ever shall be. This space at the end of the exhale is known as Bahya Kumbahka and can be manipulated in Pranayama. This space in between the out and the in breath offers benefits such as improved cognitive function, enhanced vitality, increased blood flow, and improved resilience. It also activates and purifies specific chakras and can help learn to relax under pressure. Additionally, it aids in digestion, reproductive health, concentration, and respiratory health.
I spent the winter deeply exploring areas of my yoga practices that I felt I could teach to people to cultivate compassion, kindness, love, creativity and support. All of these are deeply interconnected to space and the intersections in between. I am grateful to be part of so many communities that support my teaching and to have a business to cultivate creativity with others.
Come shake off winter’s stagnation and step into a new season with fresh inspiration, creativity and movement. Can you move in your practice with a freedom to be in the in between spaces?
Here's what lies between April and end of August that is not part of my weekly available yoga & art classes. May these events help shake up your Raja Hatha Yoga practice and clear out any stagnation from the winter. I can’t wait to practice and play with you.
